HOW TO GRIND COFFEE BEANS IN A VITAMIX OR OTHER POWER BLENDER

Can you use a blender to grind coffee beans?

ABSOLUTELY! If you have the right blender.

Grinding coffee beans can not only be enjoyable, but a relatively simple affair with a Vitamix, Blendtec, Nutribullet, Ninja or other power blender capable of blending dry goods.

There’s no need to have or purchase a specific coffee grinder, yet ANOTHER appliance to clutter up the kitchen!

You control the consistency, so make it for your preferred brewing method to get the best flavor possible!

Whether you want a french press style grind or an espresso grind, you can grind as coarse,  medium, or fine (Turkish) as you wish by length of time and power you use to grind with your blender.

COFFEE HEALTH BENEFITS & FUN FACTS

Coffee was declared illegal 3 different times throughout history. Considering it’s the second most traded commodity in the world, with over 500 billion cups consumed every year, obviously people weren’t having that!

Coffee has a long history of being blamed for many illnesses, however newer studies have shown it may have health benefits, such as protecting against Parkinson’s disease, type 2 diabetes and liver cancer.

Coffee can also help shed those extra pounds too!  Of course, as they say “Everything in Moderation.”

ok, so, for coffee snobs this is an emergency measure, of course, because you normally don’t grind enough coffee for more than one cup of coffee, so you have to know you won’t be able to use a grinder for a while. It works better if you use two cups or more, so store it in the fridge. If you use two cups in the dry container, it will cause the coffee to cycle; the coffee on the top keeps pushing down and the newly ground comes up, so you don’t get as much powder (which clog the filter) in the bottom and coarse grounds on top. If you are only grinding one cup, you need to keep stopping the blender, scrape the bottom, and keep the powder from the bottom, and constantly use the tamper. But thank you, dear, for the post, kuz coffee grinders do malfunction sooner or later 🙂 Thanks for your site!

I have a new Vitamix V1200. I would love to be able to grind coffee to a fine powder for Turkish coffee. Would be worth grinding it in the small 8 oz. container? I was thinking about using my already ground coffee to lessen the strain on the blender. I am the only one drinking it and only need a small amount. I haven’t used my new blender yet, but the possibilities are intriguing!

    1. Yes you could definitely blend in the small 8oz container if you only need a small amount. The power of the blender is still the same! Please let me know how it turns out Vanessa! 🙂

Yes absolutely! Just note that grinding can pit the jar and make it cloudy looking so just be aware of that. 🙂

  3. Thank you for sharing the coffee grinding experience. I own a Blendtec along with the twister jar and was wondering how effective it might be for grinding spices (Indian/Thai specifically).

From your coffee bean demo and my experience milling grains, I would assume the answer to be yes. In addition to spice blending quality, I am concerned about removing the smell from the jar post blend so any comments to this effect would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Hi, John! You’re absolutely correct. The Blendtec is able to grind spices. You can learn more about how Blendtec grinds spices here. Regarding cleaning your blender, using water and a small amount of dish soap and turning the machine on should do, however for a deeper clean, use a few teaspoons of apple cider vinegar, water, and baking soda. Let soak for an hour then clean out. The smell should be gone. More cleaning tips can be found here.

Thank you – just ground up a whole bag with my Vitamix after not knowing what to do with beans minus a grinder. Now I can have my coffee!

I appreciate this guide- thank you for providing it.
I tried this with a (small) Vitamix dry base as instructed.
I found that the 2 cups did not circulate during the time period recommended. I had to reblend it while making it circulate with a spatula. (I know, I know, use a tamp instead).
Because of the reblending, I overblended and the coffee got warm. I believe that this indicates that the oils were released which will compromise the flavor later when I brew it.
I would say that if you are using a Vitamix small dry base (4 cup capacity) then grinding a quantity of 1 cup should work better.

    1. Hey Sandra! Thank you so much for sharing your experience and insight with our blending-loving tribe. I’m sure it will help them when grinding coffee in their Vitamix. I personally like to only blend a little bit at a time as well so it’s fresher. 🙂 Btw, you can put your blender to use and join us for our next free challenge. HAPPY BLENDING! ~ Tarashaun

  6. Whoops! Messed up again! Arghhh. I need to use the dry grains jar. I had already partially grounded coffee from the broken Cuisanart coffee grinder. The motor finally stopped working after all of these years. It was a relatively small amount. I grounded it too fine and for too long so the coffee came out weak. I will use variable speed 1 and quickly increase to variable speed 8 for maximum 10 to 15 seconds. Thanks so much for your advice. Greatly appreciate it. I am so glad that I can use the dry container. This leaves the wet container free for smoothies!

YES LISA!!! Love it! I’m so glad you can use your dry jar too! I know too many buyers who spent the extra $$$ on a Vitamix dry jar only to have it collect dust in their kitchen cabinets! 😉 Happy Blending! ~Tarashaun

  7. Hi Courtney and welcome! 🙂 If you have a Vitamix you can definitely grind dry goods in the wet jar (we have tested this) on occasion. If you plan on doing A LOT of grinding you will probably want the special dry goods jar, as continual grinding will dull the sharp blades of the wet jar and make it less efficient over time. Hope that helps! HAPPY BLENDING!! 🙂

A little more info that is helpful.. “The Vita-Mix wet container is the default container and completely capable of producing a fine coffee grind. However, unlike the optional dry container, the wet does not allow the movement of the grinds to flow the same way which is why tapping with the tamper is required. This is also why, even with a short processing time, very fine coffee grinds will accumulate at the base of the container. These grinds are not suitable for standard American coffee and can clog coffee filters

    1. We couldn’t have said it any better! We touch on the wet vs dry Vitamix jar in grinding in our Blendtec vs Vitamix review, however not so much in this How To video. Thank you so much for providing that helpful information. 🙂 Luv, Blender Babes
